SF/BAY AREA BLACK ART WEEK

MoAD (Museum of the African Diaspora) is thrilled to announce the inaugural edition of Nexus: SF/Bay Area Black Art Week, an annual celebration that aims to illuminate the richness of the Black artist community in the SF/Bay Area. From October 1 to 6, 2024, this event will bring together institutions, galleries, creative spaces, and artists to showcase the richness of the Black artist community through special programming, exhibitions, and unique engagements.

As a leading institution dedicated to celebrating Black cultures, igniting challenging conversations, and inspiring learning through the global lens of the African Diaspora, MoAD recognizes the importance of providing a platform for Black artists to share their work, amplify their voices, cultivate community, and gain the recognition they deserve.

NEXUS SEEKS TO

Highlight Artistic Excellence:
Showcase the remarkable talent of Black artists in the Bay Area, celebrating their profound impact and notable contributions to the art community.

Foster Community:
Build a supportive and vibrant community that connects artists, curators, collectors, and art enthusiasts.

Enhance Visibility:
Elevate the visibility of Black art and culture, ensuring it receives the recognition and appreciation it deserves.

Encourage Dialogue:
Create spaces for meaningful conversations about the role of Black art in society and its influence on culture and history.

Strengthen the bridge between SF and Oakland Artist Communities:
By fostering collaboration and connections between artists in San Francisco and Oakland, we can create a more unified and vibrant arts scene, enhance opportunities for cross-city projects, and amplify the impact of Black art experiences in the Bay Area.

What to Expect

OCTOBER 1 - 6, 2024

Throughout this highly anticipated week-long celebration, Nexus will offer a calendar of events and a participant list featuring Black artists and local change-makers, focusing on the art community and dedicated to uplifting their contributions.

Curated Experiences: Enjoy a variety of curated experiences that showcase the talent and creativity of Black artists in the region.

Engaging Discussions: Participate in artist talks, panel discussions, and conversations that explore the significance of Black art and culture.

Public Events: Attend opening exhibitions, receptions, and special events at prominent galleries and cultural institutions around the Bay Area.

Open Studios: Explore open studios where you can meet artists in their creative environments and see their work firsthand.

Community Building: Connect with artists, curators, collectors, and art enthusiasts, fostering a vibrant and supportive community.

Afropolitan Ball: The week culminates in the highly anticipated Afropolitan Ball, MoAD’s largest fundraising gala and San Francisco’s premiere event celebrating Black brilliance and cultural diversity. The evening will bring together over 600 global changemakers who are shaping the future and raising critical funds to support MoAD's mission to celebrate Black cultures, ignite challenging conversations, and inspire learning through the global lens of the African Diaspora.

Join us for this extraordinary celebration and be part of a movement that champions the creativity and contributions of Black artists in the San Francisco Bay Area.

A Curator & Artist Talk with Liberatory Living Artists Michael Bennett and Malene Barnett in conversation with Curator Key Jo Lee. Liberatory Living is about creating spaces that allow us to imagine the world otherwise. In this conversation, moderated by Lee, the audience will be invited to reflect alongside Barnett and Bennett, on how leather and lace have inspired them to create new forms.
